What books did you read when you were a child?
My mom read the entire Narnia series and The Little House books out loud to me, so those are definitely some of my favourite chapter books.
If you could be a storybook character who would you be?
It would have to be a blend: a little bit of Jo March from Little Women, a dash of Coraline (Coraline), and a hint of Ella from Ella Enchanted.
What is the best thing about reading?
Reading is an escape. I can go anywhere inside the pages of a book. Reading also allows me to collect snippets of stories to fuel my own imagination and daydreams.
What is your all time favourite book?
What a question! My very favourite book, and one I am determined to re-illustrate someday, is The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. I read it every year, and am still delighted by wordplay.
Other than reading books what is the most important thing a parent can do to help develop their children’s communication skills?
Not all children communicate best through words. If that’s the case with your family, I would encourage you to help them find another outlet to develop those skills. Activities like theatre, music, art etc.
How big a part did your parents play in encouraging your writing skills?
They have always been wonderfully supportive of my drive to study and create stories. I was able to get a MA degree in Children’s Book Illustration with their help, love and encouragement.
How do you encourage your children or grandchildren to read, what books do you enjoy reading with them?
I love books with wicked villains, and that always leads me back to Roald Dahl. Matilda for fellow book lovers, The Twits for a laugh and The Witches for a bit of a scare.
Taylor was born into a house of stories and raised in Texas. Her mother used to read to her every night, and together they made their way through the worlds of Narnia, Oz and many more.
Being a happy book nerd, she attended the Cambridge School of Art (UK) for her Masters Degree in Children’s Book Illustration. Ghoul Scouts: Welcome to Camp Croak! is the first book in Taylor’s new wickedly fun new series, which she has both written and illustrated.
