Holly Smale

Ex-model Holly Smale was one of the finalists from over 70,000 entries for the "Best Job in the World", as a caretaker on an Australian paradise island! Holly’s debut novel Geek Girl is published by HarperCollins Children's Books and is the semi-autobiographical account of an unlikely teenage model as she navigates from geek to chic not necessarily successfully.

Q: What books did you read when you were a child?
A: I loved The Faraway Tree series, Ballet Shoes, Where the Wild Things Are, anything by Roald Dahl or Dr. Seuss, The Borrowers, The Tree That Sat Down, Brambly Hedge, and The Tiger Who Came To Tea. I carried books around with me like teddies.

Q: If you could be a storybook character who would you be?
A: Matilda. She’s smart, brave, funny, loves books and can move things with her mind. I’m still working on most of those qualities.

Q: What is the best thing about reading?
A: It’s the closest thing we have to magic: you can be anyone, do anything, go anywhere, and be tucked up in your own bed at the same time.

Q: What is your all time favourite book?
A: It’s an equal tie between Where the Wild Things Are, Anne of Green Gables and To Kill a Mockingbird. The child in me loves one, the teen and adult in me adore the others. Sometimes I just make them fight it out and re-read the winner.
