What books did you read when you were a child?
Books by Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume. The Little House books. The Secret Garden. And lots and lots of picture books.
If you could be a storybook character who would you be?
Mary from The Secret Garden. I wanted to be her so bad when I was a kid. Especially when she opened the garden for the first time!
What is the best thing about reading?
When you're able to connect something that you read to something in your real life—and especially when you read about someone who reminds you of yourself!
What is your all-time favourite book?
Our Animal Friends at Maple Hill Farm, by Alice and Martin Provensen.
Other than reading books what is the most important thing a parent can do to help develop their children’s communication skills?
Talk to them! And make up a lot of silly rhymes and songs.
How big a part did your parents play in encouraging your writing skills?
They were kind of busy. But they gave me a lot of freedom, so I had a lot of neat experiences, and you need to have neat experiences so that you have something to write about. And they rewarded creativity with hugs and laughs.
How do you encourage your children or grandchildren to read, what books do you enjoy reading with them?
We read aloud to our kids almost every morning and almost every night. We like reading funny middle-grade fiction and funny picture books to them.
